We don’t have to tell locals twice that from March 13th to 19th, South by Southwest packs Austin with people from all over the world. At over 50 venues across the city, SXSW offers a chance for locals to see speakers, musicians, films and multimedia experiences that are cutting-edge. Tickets are steep for those looking to enjoy everything the program has to offer at over $1,000, but did you know that there are deals that cater to Austin citizens specifically?
DISCOUNTED WRISTBAND PRICES
Music wristbands for Austin citizens can be purchased for $169, which is a steal compared to those paying $1,125 for a normal music badge. Although other badge holders get a priority, this pass lets you enjoy musical performances from the 67 countries and over 2,000 artists slated to perform. You could be a tastemaker and experience up-and-coming artists that are on the forefront of music.
Austin attendees can only purchase a wristband for themselves and one other person. However, there’s a catch, you must provide the name of the second person at the time of purchase and the credit card that is used for the purchase must contain an Austin area code. Another thing to note: wristbands don’t receive priority access, but you can use the free shuttle that runs from the Austin Convention Center, the SXSW Outdoor Stage at Ladybird Lake and the SXSW Film Festival Theaters to experience all the music you can get.
If you aren’t following SXSW-related groups or events on social media, you should. This is where you can find out about all the free shows and events around the city. Unofficial SXSW Guide has listed unofficial events in the past that locals can attend. On Do512, you can follow artists and get alerts when their shows are announced or find other free events and parties around the city.
DISCOUNTED HOTEL RATES
If you want to take a staycation to another level, Austin locals can also get access to SXSW conference rates for hotels in downtown. This means less traffic, more relaxation time for you to unplug and enjoy a new experience in your hometown. To get these rates, purchase a wristband and book your hotel room with the link on your wristband purchase’s confirmation email. You’ll have to be quick, though. SXSW is a celebrated event attracting people from all over the globe who could snag a hotel room before you.
If you love your city, why not experience it from a visitor’s perspective? SXSW is the perfect opportunity to explore new music, people and opportunities in the comfort of your own town. Tickets for residents just went on sale in January, so get them while they are available! Who knows, artists like Drake could even make a surprise appearance…
