The Best Authentic Mexican Food Restaurants in the Phoenix Area

Sharing a border with Mexico, there is no reason to settle for mediocre Mexican food restaurants in Arizona.  Straight from locals at all of our Arizona IMT communities, these are the best authentic Mexican restaurants you can find in Mesa, Tempe, Scottsdale, and Phoenix, AZ.

SOMEBURROS – Tempe, AZ / Scottsdale, AZ

Someburros is a locally owned restaurant who gives a lot back to the community. They allow anyone to host a Fundraiser at their restaurant where the featured organization will receive 20% of pre-tax sales simply by gathering around to enjoy Someburros’ fave combos, specialties, and more!  Someburros also hosts field trips for children ages 4-12 where each kid will enjoy a VIP behind-the-scenes experience, partake in a Spanish lesson, and learn the tricks of the trade with Burro Rolling 101.  With every dish on the menu telling the unique story of the Vasquez Family, showcasing the family’s signature, time tested recipes for authentic Sonoran-style Mexican food, and with amazing community service opportunities, you can feel good when eating Someburros.

La Parrilla Suiza serves authentic Mexico City cuisine with a side of cocktails and Mexican beers. With all of the restaurant’s tacos, meat and cheese dishes cooked on charcoal or grilled, and with handmade corn tortillas and authentic Mexico City salsas, it is no wonder that La Parilla Suiza has been deemed the “best Mexican food restaurant in the Valley” by reviewers on both  Yelp and Google.  Most dishes have been on the restaurant’s menu since 1969, so it is safe to say that La Parilla Suiza has become a timeless gem in the Phoenix area.

recommended dish: Huevos Rancheros or a Banana Licuado (off-menu dishes)

La Merced Kitchen is so authentically Mexican, that their website defaults to Spanish!  No worries for us English speakers though, as it has a translate feature so you can read all about their dishes.  La Merced is another family owned Mexican restaurant that offers a family atmosphere for you and your friends.  Located in Mesa, AZ on University Dr., you can either dine-in or, if you are one of the lucky residents at The Moorings at Mesa Cove or Del Coronado, La Merced Kitchen will make a home delivery!

recommended dish: Huevos Rancheros or Gollo Burro

Featuring family recipes that were created as early as 1938, this family owned establishment embodies the meaning of “mi casa es tu casa”.  With food prepared fresh, every day, with the finest ingredients available, each dish at Casa Reynoso will remind you of a transitional homemade meal from your Nana. Be sure to try their most famous dish, the Gollo Burro, which was voted #1 among locals!  We at Desert Palm Village have also taken a liking to the Huevos Rancheros.

TACO MICH – Phoenix, AZ

recommended dish: Tongue and Head Tacos or Carne Asada Tacos

Good news, night owls. Your late night taco cravings have been met. Taco Mich may not look like much on the outside, but it keeps its door open all night on Fridays and Saturdays, serving up dishes like the tongue and head taco, which may sound gross, but don’t judge a taco by its name, because, as the locals put it, this taco is “AMAZING”.  Forget Denny’s. This is your new after-hours dining spot.

Deemed the “Legend of Nando’s” for it’s authentic Mexican cuisine and generous portions, Nando’s Mexican Cafe creates new customers into regulars. They have a cozy outdoor patio that creates a fun but classy atmosphere, and the perfect venue for lunch with coworkers or happy hour with friends.

CARLOS O’BRIENS – Phoenix, AZ / Scottsdale AZ

Carlos O’Brien’s Mexican Restaurant‘s reputation is built on outstanding service and plentiful portions.  This local restaurant had humble beginnings with their first location being at a local Phoenix strip mall, but with an increasing amount of diners waiting in lines for both parking and a seat at this establishment, Carlos O’Brien’s realized it was time to expand to a much more spacious location on 12th Street and Northern in Phoenix. AZ.  Since then, they have also expanded to Scottsdale, but continue their motto of “Great Food, Huge Portions, and Excellent Service.” Whether you enjoy a dine-out experience or to order online, Carlos O’Brien’s will win your heart through your belly by providing authentic Mexican food to you.

recommended dish: Quesadilla or a Bean & Cheese Burrito

Garcia’s Mexican Restaurant is a chain Mexican restaurant with locations nationwide, from California, to Arizona, to Idaho.  However, what makes this Mexican chain unique is that, like Someburros, they too give back to the community.  Every Wednesday, from open to close, Garcia’s will host a Pay It Forward event for your non-profit 501c organization.  On this date, Garcia’s will donate 10% of all net sales.  Talk about eating for a cause.

Manuel’s Mexican Food restaurants were established in 1964. As their family grew, so did the amount of restaurants.  Today, all of the restaurants are owned and operated individually yet collectively by all members of the Salazar family. Manuel’s has received numerous awards for their quality food and they maintain that quality by preparing our food from scratch daily, just as they did in 1964.

Another family restaurant with family recipes that has been passed down for generations, Matta’s serves dishes with the finest ingredients that are made from scratch, daily.  As Mary Lou Matta Garza states herself, “God has been good to me. I have good health. Many wonderful things have come our way. There have been the ups and downs. Through it all, we have managed to build a reputable business that has evolved into a Mesa landmark.”  If you haven’t experienced Matta’s Restaurants, we encourage you to stop in and start a new family tradition.

At Mi Amigo’s Mexican Grill, items are made fresh to provide a flavorful and authentic experience. If avocados are in season, ask your server to make a GUACAMOLE ALA MESA.
